Denmark has made it to the finales!

Friday morning, the 17th of September. Teammates and spectators are cheering the players on from the sideline of the stadium of the European Life Goals Games. Male voices calling “Denmark, Denmark, Denmark!” while banging the decorated balustrades. A lot of noise. Spectators have difficulties hearing each other because of all the enthusiasm. And then the buzzer. The female team of Denmark has won with 6-1 from Bulgaria! The women, dressed in red shirts, find each other in the center of the field, they hug, they cheer. They’ve reached the finals! Something they never expected when arriving last Tuesday.
Tired but satisfied they leave the field and take a seat in their ‘skybox’. The team was formed only 6 months ago, but they have already experienced big successes together. Which is surprising, as they’ve only had three training camps to prepare for the ELGG. The key to success? “Our game gets better because we are not only teammates, but also friends. We have a strong bond. We all love to talk and have fun. When we play soccer, we cheer each other up, also when somebody misses a ball. Shouting at each other doesn’t work.”
The team is coached by two coaches from OMBOLD. OMBOLD is a Danish nonprofit organization with a focus on homeless and socially vulnerable people, playing soccer together. OMBOLD is Danish for ‘a new ball’. It symbolizes the new chance that players get by playing soccer together. “While playing soccer, you continuously get the ball, a new ball, also when you miss a shot. Thus, you get a new chance to take another shot, to score, over and over”. Exactly that is what the players at OMBOLD get. “We are not here to win, we are here to move forward and to personally develop”, is what Troels Ballings, one of the coaches, mentions.
Troels knows from personal experiences how it feels to get a second chance. “I’ve been homeless myself and was using heroin at the time I decided to participate at a soccer game organized at a homeless shelter in 2012. I hadn’t played for already 10 years at that time, but it felt so good to play a game again. Playing soccer meant a lot for me. It was one of the reasons why I succeeded getting clean. Feed forward to today, and I have been a coach at OMBOLD for three years already. It warms my heart now I’m able to give something back to the community. While playing soccer, the players don’t have to think about their problems for a minute. And even though this is only for a few hours, you see it gives them the strength to keep pushing through. Also, their overall health improves by being active”.
The European Life Goals Games is a huge experience for the team. There are a lot of impressions, a lot to process. The additional tiredness makes injuries inevitable. Despite this all, the players remain enthusiastic. They mentioned that the reasons why they are here, are among others being together, having fun, meeting others, teambuilding. And they also reflect this. The vibes are positive, they have fun together, they hype each other up. “Training for European Life Goals Games and being here is beneficial for the team spirit and social cohesion”, tells Troels. “In only half a year the players have developed already so much. This event is a huge experience for them. By participating in the European Life Goals Games the players get the feeling they matter. Representing your country at such an event gives a feeling of unity. They are going to believe in themselves”.

Vrijdagochtend 17 september, juichend en stampend staan mensen op de tribune van het stadion van de European Life Goals Games. Mannenstemmen roepen: “Denmark, Denmark, Denmark!” en slaan op de versierde balustrades. Er is veel herrie. Toeschouwers kunnen elkaar amper verstaan door het enthousiasme. En dan klinkt het eindsignaal. Het vrouwenteam van Denemarken heeft gewonnen met 6-1 van Bulgarije! De vrouwen in rode shirts rennen naar elkaar toe, omhelzen elkaar en juichen. Ze zijn door naar de finale! Iets wat ze nooit hadden verwacht toen ze hier afgelopen dinsdag aan kwamen.
Moe maar voldaan verlaten ze het veld en gaan ze zitten. Het team is nu zes maanden bij elkaar en zijn een groot succes op de European Life Goals Games. Wat verrassend is aangezien ze slechts drie trainingskampen met elkaar hebben gehad vóór de ELGG. Hun sleutel tot succes? “Ons spel verbetert doordat we vrienden zijn. We hebben een bepaalde connectie met elkaar. We houden allemaal van praten en gezelligheid. Wanneer we spelen proberen we elkaar altijd op te vrolijken, ook wanneer het minder gaat. Het werkt niet om tegen elkaar te schreeuwen.”
Het team wordt gecoacht door twee coaches van OMBOLD, een non-profit organisatie die zich met hun voetbalconcept richt op daklozen en sociaal kwetsbaren in de Deense samenleving. OMBOLD is Deens voor ‘een nieuwe bal’ en symboliseert een nieuwe kans die de spelers krijgen door het spelen van voetbal. “Tijdens het voetballen krijg je continue een nieuwe bal, ook wanneer je een eerdere goal hebt gemist. Je krijgt dus een nieuwe kans om te scoren.” En dat is wat de spelers bij OMBOLD ook krijgen. “We zijn hier niet om te winnen, maar om vooruit te gaan”, vertelt Troels Balling, één van de coaches.
Troels weet uit eigen ervaring hoe het is om een nieuwe kans te krijgen. “Ik was dakloos en verslaafd aan heroïne toen ik in 2012 in een daklozenshelter
deelnam aan een voetbaltoernooi. Ik had al 10 jaar niet meer gespeeld, maar het was zo fijn om weer te spelen. Het voetballen heeft een grote positieve rol
gespeeld tijdens mijn afkickproces. Vervolgens ben ik drie jaar geleden coach geworden. Het doet mij goed nu iets terug te kunnen doen voor anderen. Door te voetballen vergeten de speelsters even hun problemen, al is het maar voor 3 of 4 uur. Het geeft hen de kracht om door te gaan. De algehele gezondheid wordt verbeterd.”
De European Life Goals Games is voor het team een grote ervaring. Het is vermoeiend en blessures zijn niet te voorkomen, maar desondanks blijven de speelsters enthousiast. Ze weerspiegelen waar ze voor zijn gekomen: gezelligheid, anderen ontmoeten en teambuilding. “De European Life Goals Games draagt bij aan de sociale cohesie van het team”, vertelt Troels. “In een halfjaar hebben de speelsters al zo’n grote ontwikkeling doorgemaakt. Voor hen is dit een grote ervaring. Door de European Life Goals Games krijgen de speelster het gevoel dat zij ertoe doen. Hier staan voor je land geeft een gevoel van eenheid. Je gaat in jezelf geloven.”
