De Gantoise Plantrekkers zijn er helemaal klaar voor
Mogen wij voorstellen: de Belgen. Of beter: de Gentenaren. Want de Belgische deelnemers aan de European Life Goals Games komen uit de stad waar stervoetballer Kevin de Bruyne een grote jongen werd. Wij spraken met Dirk de Ridder, begeleider van het team ‘Gantoise Plantrekkers’.
Het Belgische team speelt onder de vlag van de KAA Gent Foundation, de stichting van de gelijknamige club uit de Jupiler Pro League. Dat belooft wat. “Zeker. Niet voor niets staat op ons logo Nie Neute, Nie Pleuje. Dit is een typische overeenkomst uit Gent en in het dialect. Het betekent ‘niet zagen, niet opgeven’.
Onze ploegnaam – of geuzennaam – ‘Gantoise Plantrekker’s verwijst naar Gantoise (oudere Gentenaars noemen KAA Gent nog steeds La Gantoise) en Plantrekkers zijn die er de kantjes durven aflopen maar ook leren hun plan te trekken met weinig middelen. Overlevers dus.
Elk jaar doen we mee aan een internationaal evenement. In het verleden hebben we uitwisselingen gedaan met Veld42 uit Utrecht en de Southampton Foundation. Corona trok vorig jaar een streep door onze buitenlandse trip. Daarom zijn wij blij dat we mee mogen doen aan de European Goals Games.
Onze deelnemers kijken er vooral naar uit met de bal te spelen. Maar ik moet ook zeggen dat Life Goals een uitgebreid, gevarieerd en een boeiend programma heeft ontwikkeld. Wij zijn vooral benieuwd hoe onze mensen reageren op het diverse programma en hopen we terug naar huis te keren met ‘tonnen’ aan ervaringen en nieuwe ideeën.
Wij hebben zowel een mannen- als een damesteam. Onze programma’s zijn laagdrempelig, iedereen is welkom. Dak- en thuislozen, mensen met een verslavingsproblematiek en kansarmoede.
Zo hebben we Cathy. Zij is één van de dames van het eerste uur en doet al langer dan 10 jaar mee. Via een sociaal inloopcentrum is ze bij ons met voetbal begonnen. Inmiddels heeft ze een dak boven haar hoofd en is ze opnieuw mama geworden. Nog elke week neemt ze de bus voor een rit van één uur om samen met haar oudste dochter bij ons te komen voetballen. Het blijft voor haar een uitlaatklep en een manier om bij moeilijke momenten rust in haar hoofd te vinden. We moeten voorzichtig zijn met haar. Na twee hartoperaties moet Cathy het sportief heel rustig doen. Als ze in overdrive raakt moeten we haar temperen, maar dan neemt e langs de zijlijn de rol op van supporter die haar team aanmoedigt en coacht.”

The Gantoise Plantrekkers are ready for it
May we introduce: the Belgians. Or better: the Gentenaren. Because the Belgian participants in the European Life Goals Games come from the city where star football player Kevin de Bruyne became a big boy. We spoke with Dirk de Ridder, supervisor of the ‘Gantoise Plantrekkers’ team.
The Belgian team plays under the flag of the KAA Gent Foundation, the foundation of the Jupiler Pro League club of the same name. That is promising. “Certainly. It is not without reason that our logo contains Nie Neute, Nie Pleuje. This is a typical similarity from Ghent and in the dialect. It means ‘don’t whine, don’t give up’.
Our team name – or nickname – ‘Gantoise Plantrekker’s refers to Gantoise (older Gentenaars still call KAA Gent La Gantoise) and Plantrekkers are those who dare to cut corners but also learn to plan with few resources. Hence, surviving.
Every year we participate in an international event. In the past, we have done exchanges with Veld42 from Utrecht and the Southampton Foundation. Corona drew a line through our foreign trip last year. That is why we are happy to participate in the European Goals Games.
Our participants are especially looking forward to playing with the ball. But I must also say that Life Goals has developed an extensive, varied and exciting program. We are especially curious how our people react to the diverse program and hope to return home with ‘tons’ of experiences and new ideas.
We have both a men’s and a women’s team. Our programs are accessible, everyone is welcome. Homeless people, people with addiction problems and disadvantaged people.
That’s how we got Cathy. She is one of the ladies from the very beginning and has been participating for more than 10 years. She started playing football with us through a social walk-in center. She now has a roof over her head and has become a mother again. Every week she still takes the bus for a one-hour ride to come and play soccer with her oldest daughter. It remains an outlet for her and a way to find peace in her head during difficult moments. We have to be careful with her. After two heart surgeries, Cathy has to take it easy in sports. If she goes into overdrive, we have to temper her, but then she takes on the role of a supporter who encourages and coaches her team on the sidelines.”
